Exploring Belfast: Puddle Photography

You’ve likely heard the phrase, “composition is key.” Photography is about capturing a scene in a way that evokes emotion and tells a story. Often, the most compelling images rely on the creative use of composition.

Puddle photography presents a unique challenge that pushes you to see the world differently. In Ireland, where rain is abundant, puddles are a common sight. While the weather might seem like an obstacle, it also offers exciting creative opportunities.

When we look at puddles, we often overlook the surface reflections and focus on the murky water beneath. But it takes effort—and a keen eye—to appreciate the beauty of a reflection.

For example, I applied this approach when photographing the Blackford Dolphin oil rig at Belfast’s Harland and Wolff. The reflection on the puddle’s surface added depth and drew attention to the focal points of the image.

Technique 2: Puddle Photography Full Reflection Composition

Another technique involves using the puddle as the sole frame for your subject. In this approach, the viewer’s perspective is entirely based on the puddle’s surface, creating an intriguing juxtaposition between the puddle and its reflection.

To achieve this effect, keep your camera low and as close to the water’s surface as possible. Even a slight change in angle can drastically alter the final image. Cameras with an LCD tilt screen are especially helpful for this technique, allowing you to easily see what’s being captured from such a low vantage point.

Experiment with blending the reflection with the reality of the puddle—abstract shapes and patterns can emerge, resulting in captivating and surreal compositions.

Tips for Balancing Reflection and Reality

You can fine-tune the interplay between reflection and reality by adjusting the camera’s distance from the water, as well as the aperture to control depth of field. Revealing more of the puddle’s edge can help the audience process the image more quickly, while tighter compositions emphasize the reflection’s abstract qualities.
